Astro Cat is adorable. I read volume seven, it had a classic
storyline, beginning, middle, end, problem, climax, solution. But it was
enjoyable. Astro Cat goes to a museum with his owner and ends up awakening the
spirit of an ancient mummified cat that used to be owned by a Pharaoh. The
mummified cat places his personal vendetta on Astro Cat, but when he rejects,
the mummy cat comes after Astro Cat with an army of mummified animals. It’s all
so absurd it becomes pretty funny. I haven’t read any of the others but I’m
guessing most of these tales are just about the kind of trouble Astro Cat and
his owner can get into. The trouble that by definition seems really large;
summoning an ancient mummified animal army to attack you in your own home, but
somehow boxing it down into an easy twenty page, easily resolved story. It’s
nice to absorb the kind of relationship that is already a set friendship, like
that of Astro Cat and Tsugio. It requires no initial building, it’s already
there for you, which is very nostalgic of kids books and stories. Kind of like
The Magic Treehouse, where you can read any of the books as a kid and already
know the brother and sister are partners in all of their endeavors.
